Why Kerning is Important |
Contributed by Johnny
Monday, 04 July 2005 |
Below is a real-world example of why good kerning (the space between pairs of letters) is important-the following image appeared in my local newspaper on Friday. The image wasn't doctored in any way-this is just the way it appeared.
The "L" and "I" are a bit too close together, so the word comes out a little differently than it probably was intended.
Good thing it didn't say "Hot Flicks".
WARNING: Sample word resembles a certain 4-letter obscenity. DO NOT VIEW if you are offended by 4-letter words...

Photoshop Quick Tip #8-Secret Dragging Tip |
Contributed by Johnny
Tuesday, 03 May 2005 |

Ever need to drag a layer or selection from one image to another and keep the layer or selection in exactly the same place?
Why would you want to do this? One example might be if you have set up a text template in one file and need to drag the text to exactly the same place in the other file, this will do the trick. Or if you're doing a series of face illustrations and you need to copy eyes, noses, etc. from one image to another and have then stay in the same place.
Try this-
1. Go to the image you want to drag from
2. Either create a selection from that image or choose a layer
3. Pick the Move Tool, hold down SHIFT, and drag the layer or selection into the new file
It will be in exactly the same place as before, but in the new image!

This technique was taught to me by artist/photographer Jeff Brown of Jeff Brown Photography (http://www.jeffbrownphotography.com/).

You see the written word all around you-on menus in restaurants, on billboards, signs, even the opening or closing credits in a Hollywood blockbuster.
And many of these things are well designed, and yet, I keep seeing incredibly bad kerning in some of the most professional of advertisements.
Is it possible that the designer slept through the typography classes in college and has no idea what kerning is?

But you CAN preview the fonts in your list one at a time much quicker than looking through the font menu...

This technique shows how to make one, then dirty it up a bit, for, as we all know, Caution Bars exist only in areas where slimy gritty oily stuff is about! |
